Belkin54g wireless router

Could any of you computer wizards tell me how to secure my wireless router as it can be accessed by anybody at the present. I am thick when it comes to computers so would welcome any advice given.
Many thanks, John

It sounds like you're trying to modify your computer's connection to your wireless network rather than modifying your wireless network's network settings...
Unless you've changed it, the private IP address of your wireless router is likely to be something beginning 192.168 - does that sound familiar?

I have attempted to secure the router but each time I have tried I end up with the router disconnected, (I told you I was thick when it comes to computer
I clicked on Belkin 54g wireless network then I went onto Security Type and it came up with:-
open, shared, WPA2-Personal, WPA-Personal, WPA2-Enterprise, WPA-Enterprise and 802,1X
I clicked on Encryption Type:- None and WEP
When I opened WPA etc., it has a box for Network Security Key but I don't know where to find this as I have tried putting my own security key and it says it isn't recognised

From your computer, open up your web browser and try to access the following web addresses:
http://192.168.0.1
http://192.168.0.2
http://192.168.1.1
http://192.168.1.2
Did any of those take you to what looks like your router's maintenance pages...?

Good morning all, and many thanks for your input.
I have spent the last half hour trying to secure my wireless router, I have tried all of the http numbers given but they all come up with the message:- "Oops! This link appears to be broken"
I clicked on WPA-Personal and the encryption type is either, AES or TKIP, so I tried both of these in turn, I tried entering a password where it says Network Security Key, but I get a message saying, "The settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network"
I don't know where I am going wrong but I still have an open network which is visible to everybody because I am unable to secure it, many thanks again for everybody who is trying to assist me, John

Hi folks, I have finally succeeded in securing my router, having said that I had to ring Belkin and spent over half an hour on the phone speaking to a foreign lady which is the reason I have taken so long as I struggled to understand her, having said that, she knew what she was talking about. Whatever I did wrong, I was unable to access the router at all, I had to reset that first, then she talked me through setting up the security which consists of 10 numbers.
Thanks again MarkRae, Dabees, and northernmonkey.
