Restore after a "fatal error".

My laptop suffered a fatal error when it was going into hibernation last night. When I logged back on the icons have become huge and e mails etc are far too large to handle easily.
I have tried "back up and restore" in the control panel but this hasn't solved the problem. Any suggestions as to how I can get back my small icons and text in e mails please?

What version of windows? and make and model of laptop please.

Your laptop might have booted into safe mode. Does it say "Safe Mode" in each corner? Shut the laptop down and restart it.

Windows Vista. Dell YK 196. Nothing showing "safe mode". Can't find "properties".

As mentioned above, right click on a blank part of the desktop (i.e. do not put mouse cursor over any icons. Then right click. Properties will be one of the options on the right click menu. Then select the settings tab.

All I get when I right click is a list giving, "view,sort by, new, & personalise", no properties option.

It is the personalise option you want with Vista.

OK, but that just takes me to the personalise section of the Control Panel which I've tried. Also the b****y thing won't let me hibernate it on the Power Options in the Control Panel or the Start Button either. Heellpp!!

You may need to reinstall the graphics drivers.

I would provide a link to them but YK 196 is not a model number, if you can find the correct model number I'll hunt out the drivers.
