CD drawer won't open

I have two 'drawers' on my PC, one that I would normally use for installing, re-installing a programme or reading from a CD, but for some reason it won't open - just a green light for a few seconds and then nothing. I haven't used it for a few weeks and wonder if it due to something I have done. I tried re-starting the PC but it made no difference. I can use the second drawer (normally for burning CDs) but don't like having something that doesn't work! Glad if anyone can tell me please what the trouble is likely to be.

When I first got my laptop the drawer wouldn't open, the handbook told me to insert the end of a paperclip in the hole to release the mechanism, it worked and I haven't had to use it since.
