Laptop won't get beyond start up

Hi my son has an acer aspire 6920G. He's picked up several viruses including a worm or two and now it will not get beyond the second screen, the first screen is the acer logo and then it goes to the bios blue and white password bar but when i try to type in the administrator password i set up in the bios this mroning, the first letter will not appear on the screen and the flashing curser freezes.

Sounds pretty serious but apart from the hardrive being destroyed is there any other possibility?

Ignore what is/is not appearing on the screen - just type in your password, followed by Enter, regardless of what the cursor does and regardless of what does/does not appear on the screen.

AlBags - I'm not familiar this particular model, but am pretty sure that, like other Acer stuff, the CMOS battery is encapsulated in a green plastic overcoat, soldered to the mobo, and access to it requires removing the keyboard from behind (inside the main battery compartment) - hence my previous post of "not a DIY job"

Ok thanks, then it's not going to happen now as i've typed in every password and nothing happems. My son does pay for insurance on it that should cover break doiwn but I can't get it back to the store until Saturday. Thanks for sharing your ideas guys anyway. : )
