I've given up on System Restore because it simply does not work and hasn't done so for at least a couple of years. There are plenty of Restore Points and It goes through the motions but the end is always the same, telling me the system could not be restored to the given date. This appears to be a common problem on the Internet. I have Windows XP and Service Pack 3. Please has anyone actually overcome this problem and how did you do it? Might it be something to do with Norton internet Security?

I had this problem once with XP on my last computer. You can pick a point but it won`t do it. I had some kind of after sales service with my computer and I phoned the helpline (not cheap but you try to keep it to a minimum) and they talked me through it. I seem to remember it being something to do with doing it as an administrator. It`s difficult, yes but not impossible. It can be done.
By the way, I don`t remember it being anything to do with Norton
Yes it DOES have something to do with Norton. I have had direct experience with this on my wife's laptop.
See this link for how to overcome it.

Thank you both for taking the trouble to reply. The link you gave vascop did the trick. I can hardly believe it after such a long time. It does mean a bit of extra concentration when one wants to do System restore but well worth it - and very important of course to turn Norton Tamper Protection back on after the job's done. Thank you so much.
