Well I must say how annoying it is Microsoft have decided to change everything in Office. When drawing in Microsoft word does anyone know how to change the thickness of a line please?

Draw your line or shape. Highlight it, and the 'Drawing Tools' tab should appear with the 'Format' menu beneath it. Click on 'Format' and then click on the little drop-down arrow next to the 'Shape Outline' button. You should be able to choose your line thickness from there.

Alternatively, right-click the line or shape and choose 'format autoshape' from the menu that appears. That'll bring up a dialogue box where you can choose the actual line weight.
