Granny Google's Website Verification Process.

Greetings each.
Does anyone know anything about the above please OR: Has anyone ever managed to get it to work?
Both my colleague and I have gotten as far as pasting the "widget" onto our sites but Google's stupid system can then never find the ruddy things!
I tried the exercise several years ago without any luck: My colleague tried it yesterday in order to get "merchant status".
The whole thing seems a complete waste of time to me!
