Is there a way to prevent the first message in either the Inbox or Junkfolder opening automatically when I view the message list?

Click on the cogwheel at top right
Choose more mail settings
In the "Reading email" section, click on "Reading pane"
Put a dot by "Only after I select it"

Found it!! Thank you - I had to go into 'Options' then 'More Options' and finally 'Reading Pane Settings'!!
