Black screen, message in right hand corner states:

Window is not genuine.
Black Screen
Window 7 7601

I have tried Systems Restore...but doesn't work.
Tried cmd but after inserting slmgr/rearm it tells me i need "elevated privileges" to let me in.

Have Googled "elevated privileges" but far too complicated for sqad.

Any simple answers lads?

P.S Window IS genuine.

This is quite a common problem as a search on "Windows 7601" finds lots of hits, though some of the fixes look complex.

There are a couple of YouTube videos but I have no idea if they work or not.

Here is one YouTube video.

To run CMD with elevated privileges:
Type CMD in the search box.
Then when it shows in the list, RIGHT-click and choose "run as administrator".

The Chair...thanks.

I tried that and it seems to show promise until i entered slmgr-rearm, it then said that I had had too many goes at getting in and that i had to re download, my OS.

I can't find the disc.
Tapping f8 rapidly at boot up, should open Safe Mode (choose 'with network). OR as under

Question Author
tambo...safe mode didn't work and neither did your link.

I will just have to live with it.

Thanks all.
Switch Off and start again.
It's possible that you have picked up a 'Nasty'. Maybe a Browser Hijacker. Incidentally, what Browser are you using.

Have you tried scans with your Anti Virus programme and Malwarebytes (The free version).

Hans....Google Chrome.

Yes, I have scanned....all clear.
How do you know for sure it is genuine ?

I bought 2, Windows 7 OSs once both supposedly genuine. Must have been genuine, had to be because as they ran for months without issue. But when Microsoft felt enough time had elapsed to ensure a possible "dodgy seller" to have got away, then and only then they started claiming it wasn't genuine. Must have been %$£$"^%$"^ hilarious for Microsoft, aiding and abetting the bad guys like that whilst dumping on the good guys from a great height. I bet their pants haven't dried out yet.

By sheer luck I was able to find the invoice and contact the seller and he replaced the 2 OSs with ones that have worked ever since.
Pity you are using Google Chrome. It's the one Browser that no longer will I have in any of my equipment. I just don't trust it.

To check if your Windows is genuine :-

Click on Start, then Control Panel, then click on System > Security, and finally click on System. Scroll to bottom of the page and it should indicate that Windows is activated and there will be the official Product ID Number.

Hans.

It gives a product ID no but it says above the number...activate today.

On following the instructions, the following and final message is to ask for £138 for a new system.
Is it genuine Windows, sqad?
Question Author
hc.....I thought it was, but now have my doubts.

See my post above to Hans.
You used to be able to get rid of this with slmgr/rearm, but i cant seem to get rid of the latest 'not genuine virus'. I think you get 5 attempts and there is away to re-set the attempts to zero but i would have to have a look a bit later
ps, when i reset my laptop to zero attempts that still didnt work (hence some buttons are now missing from the keyboard)
Question Author
Orderlimit....yes I know, but it doesn't work this time as i am interrupted with either "elevated privileges" or enable OS again.

slmgr/rearm has always worked.
You could try to reactivate Windows via phone, sometimes works!:-

- Click the 'Windows Start' icon, then in the Search box type: "slui.exe 4"
- Next press the 'ENTER' key
- Select your 'Country' from the list.
- Choose the 'Phone Activation' option. A MS Phone number to call will display, UK number is 0800 018 8354
- Stay on the phone (DO NOT select/press any options) and wait for a person to help you with activation.
- Explain your problem to the support person.
- Hopefully the MS support person will give you a confirmation ID code number, best to copy it down on paper. You will also initially be asked to read out the code number displayed on your screen.
- Read back ID code to support person to verify
9) Enter the confirmation ID number on screen and click 'Next' to finish the activation process.

Hope it works for you!
How long have you had the OS.? Has it been working previously without any problems.? Are you using it at present to post into AB.?

If it is Not a genuine copy of Windows, it is understandable that you are unable to activate it. Having said that, I wold be interested to know how originally you got it working without going through an activation process.

Hans.
