The one I have definitely works very well.
That doesn't mean it will work as well in your home with your set up.
Have you looked at power plugs? Works very well if the two sockets are on the same circuit
Search for power line, not power plugs
Many people curse their wi-fi extenders because they site them in the wrong position. For example, if your router is at the front of your house and you're getting a lousy wi-fi signal at the back of your house, putting a wi-fi extender at the back of the house won't help. It need to be in the middle of the house, where it can receive a good signal and then pass it on from there.

With that said, most wi-fi extenders are reasonably good at their jobs, although the construction of some buildings can cause problems.

PC Mag is an excellent source of independent reviews:

(NB: Make sure that you click the 'right' arrow, near to the top of the page, to see all 12 products, rather than just the 5 that you initially see. Each one of those 12 is rated 'best' under different circumstances).
What do you think of powerlines, Buenchico? No good for me as my house is on two circuits but excellent for those with problems with thick walls and distance.
Powerline extenders should still work when you've got separate power circuit, Barry, as long as the wiring ends up at the same distribution board:

I've never tried them myself though, so I can't really comment further (other than to note that quite a few ABers seem to use them, with good results). My little one bedroom 'starter home' is so small that I'm almost in touching distance of my router (if it wasn't for a wall or a ceiling) anywhere in the house, so I've never had need of an extender of any type,
