I downloaded a film from Limewire, after waiting for what seemed hours for it to download, I tried to play it and a screen appeared with; windows picture and fax viewer - no preview available. How do you know when downloading what is an actual film?

You can't watch video with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer - that program is for stll images.

Right click on your movie - click 'open with' and choose an appropriate program.

Problem with Limewire is you have no real idea what you are downloading - could be anything, including viruses.
Fay's last paragraph is the important one here, if you try and download a film from limewire you have no real idea what you are downloading, it could be a totally different film to the one you think you are downloading or it may not be a film at all, if you are lucky you just spend 6 hours downloading a file that does nothing, if your unlucky you spend 6 hours downloading a file that installs a loverly virus on your computer the first time you click on it.

Limewire needs to be used with extreme caution, or preferably not at all
Use mininova and utorrent, rather than limewire. Download vlc player (free) to watch your movies.
PS. Before you open any downloaded files, right click and scan with your antivirus, then with your antispyware. On mininova you can click on comments, before you download, to find out if it`s worth downloading.
