everyone hates norton but in 3 years of using it, it has never given me a problem in any shape or form
I think it slows down a bit when doing a complete scan. But I don't find it too bad.
no disrespect meant bob, but maybe it's not working.
Not sure about the current version, but earlier versions had a habit of running a complete scan on startup. This is a pretty pointless exercise and will slow down you PC until the scan has finished. Go into the config and turn of any scheduled scans.

download http://www.ccleaner.com/download
run it with the default settings ... see if it helps.
defrag your disc ....
remove stuff you don't use

no disrespect laj - do you know this to be the case - or maybe it's that you believe everything you hear ... without foundation.

Trolly, Ive had problems with Norton and posted on here about it. At that time you recommended I uninstall it and install Avast or AVG.
Make sure you haven't got AVG set to scan every day. Our PC used to slow down dramatically every day at around 7pm and it was only by chance that we noticed it was set to run a scan every day at that time.
I am having problems with AVG as well, I don't think it is working. It pops up automatically and doesn't scan, I have to minimise it to get it off, how do I update it or get rid of it!!
I have AVG and when doing a scan it's so frustrating so I just 'pause' the scan. Or cancel it completely. It may be set to scan at the same time everyday (you can hear it working) and if scan all areas will take forever. If you haven't already create a small icon/shortcut in the start up menu, you can see when it's active as a white arrow appears on the icon, then right click and pause or cancel. You can also change the time it is set to auto scan and auto turn off the pc when finished. So maybe set it to scan at 12midnight then go to bed and leave it to turn off your pc and it wont bother again.
4 years ago Norton fcuked my machine up by actually allowing a virus to get through. I have used AVG since then with no probs, though I have noticed that my pc is slightly slower with the new 8.0 version.
