Lately my bills are getting really high especially when I travel use my mobile for roaming. I was thinking of using a voip instead for majority of my calls but not sure how it works or how to go about it. I've read that no matter where you are you can use a voip as long as you have good internet connection.

So that means I can get a voip service in the U.S. and use that account any where right? Was thinking of signing up with Onesuite.com because they also have prepaid phone card service that has access numbers around the globe including most parts of Europe, Asia and North America. So a voip and a prepaid long distance card in one account seems a good idea.

Just wanna make sure voip works that way.

I use Skype myself http://www.skype.com/intl/en-gb/getconnected/ free calls to other computers & cheap calls to landlines . Personally I just use the free to computer service
I use Skype for everything as I don't have a land line.

I pay 1.50 a month that allows me call any geographical landline number in the world for 3p, regardless of the length of the call.

Skype to Skype is free. I also have SkypeIn, which allows landline numbers to call me - as far as they are concerned they are calling a normal UK number and get charged as if they were.

This has a big advantage. Where ever I am I can log in to Skype and see who has called me and when, access my voicemail and so on exactly as if I were at home.

About Skype, I stopped using it a long time ago, checked their rates and found out most voip providers got lower rates than them and you can not use your own device say a grandstream ATA or other IP phone aside from what Skype sells. For chatting or video conferencing I use Yahoo Voice or Yahoo Messenger.
Using also Onesuite here. Better than Skype in my opinion.
Yes you're right. VoIP can be use anywhere as long as you are connected to internet. No extra charge for long distance calls. Try http://www.ringcentral.com and get your voip number. Also check here for other voip service provider http://www.myofficephonesystem.com.
When calling long distance, VoIP could be the right solution since it is very cost effective and can be use anywhere as long as there is internet.
If you are using Skype or Google Voice then you are using VoIP. VoIP systems are the cheaper alternative for a full-featured PBX system. In fact VoIP systems are getting more and more features such as, call screening, that will slowly outpaced the PBX systems we know today.
