For Windows XP, from the Windows Explorer task bar, choose Tools -->Folder Options --> View tab. Scroll down in the Advanced Settings Window and check the box which says "remember this folder's view settings".

I don't know about Vista, but I would imagine the steps are something similar.

many thanks for that..being computer stupid i got my son to check this out, it was similar to what you told me, but the box was already ticked, so alas that cant be my problem, many thanks again for your time and trouble.
surely the problem to which you refer is the id tag of the file itself?

play in windows media player and on the right it shows the song. right click and within the options there you can alter the id listing.
A little bit more research and apparently Vista not remembering Folder View settings is a known issue. There is a 'fix' :-

However, I would think twice before resorting to a download 'add-on' / registry edit for a cure for what is, essentially, a not-too-serious problem. Maybe there will be an official Microsoft fix in the near future.
