ms removal tool Virus?

My laptop seemed to have been infected with 'MS Removal Tool'. I couldn't do anything with out warning messages flashing up everywhere and requests for me to click on a link to help me get rid of them - I didn't, as I knew it was a virus.
I ran my anti virus but it said it hadn't detected anything. I closed the laptop down. The next day when I switched it on, there is no sign of the virus and the laptop seems to be working fine!
I don't believe the virus just vanished so how can I check to see if it's still lurking somewhere?
Any advice greatly received.

I removed the same virus from my friend's PC yesterday. Malwarebytes Antimalware took care of this Ms Removal Tool virus. It also removed additional malware, trojan or smth. You can download Malwarebytes Antimalware from this web page:
