can anybody take me through the procedure for compiling a two or three column list then sorting them all alphabetically(by that i mean all lists are in a-z order so when printed out they all appear fully alphabetical).I believe excel should do it but how?

Then sort individual colums and the blank columns will buffer the ones not to be sorted. This is the method I use to sort out league tables where col A is always the positions 1- 20. Another method, i believe is to use different fonts in the columns. I think the theory is that XL will only sort the same font.
