Crtl Alt Del (hold all keys down). Shutdown from the option shown on top of dialog box displayed. Might take a while if a program has crashed. You might also get other boxes shown stating some programs need to close.

Keep unplugged from mains until battery runs down.
Pull the plug out. Are you blonde?
Sorry, that was rude, but couldn't resist.
mike11111 – at the risk of appearing rude, I assume that you have very fair coloured hair.

Pulling the mains plug from a laptop will result in it running on battery (the laptop may remain on for many hours depending of the state of the battery) – a bit of a pain every time you want to shut down the laptop.

Most laptops have a reset button, normally operated via a small pin poked through the enclosure aperture on the base or side of the machine.
If all else fails simply shut down by keeping your finger on the laptop's on/off button? When you restart it all may be normal.
