My computer is ignoring me

My main hobby is entering competitions on the internet. I seldom go into 'dodgy' sites and up to now have managed to enter the competitions with no problem.

Alas - last week I got a new PC and have been having problems entering some competitions.

Once I have entered the above site and hit the 'win' button at the top I should be able to hit the button and enter the competition. The button ignores my request.

The same happens at other websites too. When I hit the enter this comp button nothing happens. I have allowed add-ons on the sites but that isn't the problem.

Can anyone help me?

What browser are you using ?
Question Author
Sorry - forgot that bit. I am using firefox on windows 7.
Are you using the NoScript add-on ?
Question Author
I don't know what that is - so no.

I have an auto-fill add on, BBcodeXtra and google toolbar.
Try clicking on Tools at the top of your screen, then Options and select the Content tab. make sure Enable Javascript has a tick in the box next to it.
Question Author
There is a tick and there is an entry for java in my add-ons.
Might be a silly question but is the Java add-on enabled ? If so, there should only be a "Disable" button next to it.
Question Author
Not a silly question - you should see my question in the DIY section!

It is enabled. This problem only happens in some sites and not others - which, to me, is odd. The problem is that I don't really understand all this stuff - but I tinker with settings (not in this case as the computer is only a week old) and can get myself in some awful messes.

I would still be sleeping if it were not for my b100dy 'starving' cats.
That's the problem - your hungry cats have been trying to eat your computer mouse and it no longer works !
Maybe not...
Just in case these sites require 3rd party cookies, is your browser set up to accept them ? (Tools, Options, Privacy tab)
I hope your cats aren't trying to eat my avatar.
Question Author
Yes - I have loads of cookies and there is noting listed in the exceptions box.

My last PC went to get fixed a couple of years ago and the guy found that it was full of cat hair. So they may not be completely innocent.

My brother talks java or something but I a not sure if he just programmes it or if he can help me with this. Alas he sleeps at nights!
He hasn't got a lot of patience - always a problem with me as a sister.

;-)

Just thought of something else - when I am trying to change a CAPTCHA nothing happens. Previously I was able to just clip the button and a new set of words would come up.
I think I've run out of (sensible) ideas. Probably best to wait for Chuck, Buenchico or some other techie to wake up. At least they will know what has been tried and checked already so maybe they can give you a quick diagnosis.
Good luck with the computer and the mowling moggies; I find tuna is a good silencer.
Question Author
Thanks for the help - my other cat is an avid bird watcher and your avatar would not last very long. He is a sweet natured cat - his sister is stupid and vicious but beautiful. I love them both dearly.

Have a good **** - depending on your time zone. Here in Scotland it is almost time to get up.

;-)
last thought - are you running the AdBlock add-on ?
Question Author
I was until a few days back - it was disabled as it was getting on my nerves.

Computers were sent to drive us nuts. They manage to do so.

Thanks

Susan
I found AdBlock was messing up my Hotmail (God knows why) so had to disable it.
OK, I give up. I'll be interested to see what the techies come up with...
Question Author
Ok - I may as well go and get my breakfast and then go to bed. Have a nice day/night.

Thanks
Question Author
At the time of my last post Ad blocker software was disabled but not removed, I removed it just before going to bed.

When I got up and started firefox again I was able to enter my competitions. Alas I now have to contend with tons of stupid adverts everywhere.

Thanks samak.
Excellent - now we know what it was. You may be able to get the best of both worlds. Try reinstating it and enabling it and then close and reopen Firefox. When you get to your competition page click on the little arrow in the ABP icon and select "Disable on [the website you're on]". Close and reopen Firefox again and go to the page again. It may now work.
If it doesn't you can always get rid of the add-on again.
