Are you sure you were actually turning it off and not putting it into suspend?

It's not uncommon for laptops to not come out off suspend properly occasionally.

Thanks. If I did put it into suspend I don't know how I did it. What baffles me is that only the screen was inactive not the rest of the workings, and why removing the battery fixed it.
