does the amazon kindle have a backlight and, if so, how do you switch it on?

A backlight would exhaust the battery too quickly, but you can buy externally-powered accessories:

as chris has indicated, no it dosen't. I guess it helps with the readability too, not having one

I clip a book light to the cover of mine, works very well too.

After buying two of the various models of "clip-on lights" a friend showed me this: Amazon.com User Recommendation and we bought it immediately... works great and doesn't drain the battery quickly...
