Well, it depends on how many spare IDE connectors you have.  You could have 3 on IDE control.  If you had SCSI then you could have more.  If you have USB Hard Drives even more.  So the answer is that it's not XP dependent but your hardware dependency.

This depends on how many EIDE connectors or SATA connectors you have on your motherboard. For each EIDE connection, you can attach 2 drives (either CD / DVD drives or Hard Drives), and on each SATA connection, you can attach one drive (usually Hard Drives, although CD / DVD drives are slowly becoming available).

On the assumption (dangerous, I know) that you have a "standard" system, you will probably have 2 EIDE connections - which will allow 4 drives in total (remember to count how many CD / DVD drives you have on board already) - however, you can get expansion PCI boards which allow you to attach more drives to a single system (and from experience, the performance hit isn't as bad as you may think)
