Computer stuck on "logging off"

Help please. My laptop has been "logging off" for 4 hours.It was O.K till it did a scheduled McAfee scan,which removed 2 tracking cookies but showed no other issues.The scan took nearly 6 hours (normally 1 hour max). Logging off normally takes 10 seconds.i use Vista and Internet Explorer.How can I get it back to normal please?

Eureka! I tried removing then replacing the battery and it worked.
