Low Battery

Further to my previous posts on my low battery, my screen just goes black now when the battery needs charging, I don't even get the warning in the little window to charge the battery. Why is this ? And then when I do plug it in, and the screen lights up again, I get the little window saying it needs charging, when I am charging it !

Also I've noticed the little logo of the plugged-in battery at bottom right of laptop screen. Doesn't look like its 'topping up', when I take plug out and put it into laptop again it looks like its loading, then it stops and just looks half charged and the white part doesn't move again ... is it supposed to do this, I haven't noticed before. Should it look like its 'topping up' all the time with the white bit moving ? I have windows 7. Do I need a new battery, or a new plug ?? If so where do I get it, can I get someone to put a new battery in my laptop?

does it run off the power supply with the battery removed?

Oh dear dont get technical. I presume the battery is in the laptop and I charge it by putting the plug on and plugging the cable into the side of the laptop. Sorry I'm not technical ... I dont know how to remove the battery from the laptop ...
