BT Broadband Dials out....but why?

Just bought a new modem ADSL for my 2.3 mbps connection but once in a while it dials out for no reason claiming there isn't a dial tone.

All the right sockets have filters attached and really there is no reason for this to happen. All the modem settings are ok. Is there something i am missing? Why does it connect for a large amount of time and then think 'ooooo i fancy a rest!'?

I thought it was always on connection, my bt voyager 100 modem was ok and would stay connected for days but this just goes on holiday when it wants.

HELP!!!!!

When you the message 'no dial tone' that means that your modem cant pick the bb signal correctly from the line. Usually caused by filtering or distance issues but if the voyager worked OK then I'm guessing it might be the modem drivers. Try reinstalling the modem to see if that solves the issue. Also BT have picked a lot more customers recently. If a lot more people in your area have got bb that can have an effect on the strength of signal being received at your home which can cause problems like this. It's always worth giving the helpdesk a quick call and get them to run a test on the line to make sure that everythings OK, but they won't help you unless you've got the voyager connected - 3rd party equipment is not supported by bt (quite rightly). Might be worth investing in a router on 2mb line - stays connected all the time so you dont have all these disconnection / reconnection issues. Hope this helps!

I was told about buying a router, i've just bought a laptop and will want the 2mb broadband line used for that as well so i have two puters with broadband access on will this be of use.

If not what do i need?

It is a router that you need. You can either get one from a computer store or from BT by upgrading the package. It's probably a bit more expensive to get it from BT but you'll get full technical support from them and help setting up your home network. If you're not sure what you're doing then I'd recommend this option. If you get it from anywhere else and you have problems BT will basically just refuse to help you until you stick your voyager back on so ifs a config issue you'll be stuck. They've just started doing the HG1800 - pretty handy piece of kit and you can use it wirelessly.
