Despite appearing still half full, my printer is only printing bits of the type. Any clues please?

Probably dirty heads. Run the printer utilities and do a head clean.
ditto dirty heads!
Printer needs re aligning. Check the manual or on line as to how to carry out this procedure as different for each printer
The printer head cleaning facility using a hell of a lot of ink from all colours and not just the one that's dirty, thus wasting ink.
You don't say which printer it is but if the print heads are removeable or are a part of the ink cartridge then try soaking the print head in a saucer of hot (not boiling) water until the water cools down.

Thanks for your answers. Sadly I am unsure what a print head is, nor do I know how to run utilities, nor how to clean a head. Im pretty useless I know, I may ask my daughter in law , she is good with things like this, Many thanks.

It the bit that squirts the ink onto the paper.

"nor do I know how to run utilities"
Well, if it had occurred to you to post the make and model of the printer, we could have told how to in the first answer.

Quite honestly based on that I'm suprised you thought you were going to get an answer that made any sense to you anyway
Hi, Lyn, I presume you got a manual with the printer?
