I have decided to buy my first smartphone – it runs Android 4.0.4 (ice cream sandwich). Up to now I have always ignored any mention of apps that I have seen either online or in print and thus have no idea about what’s available, other than there seems to be a lot of them.
So I would be grateful for any suggestions for apps that have proved to be useful or fun; I’m interested in photos, videos and cinema but am not going to limit myself to those areas.
p.s. I am a skinflint so any app that has to be paid for will need to be very special.
Tunein Radio
Apndroid (turns off data to save battery and/or money)
Battery Monitor Widget
3G watch (monitors data usage)
Superstores Locator - useful for finding cheap food/petrol when away from home
A spirit level (loads available)
A compass (also loads about)
A Wi-Fi auditer (possibly not so useful for you)
A Torch (if the phone has a flash for the camera)
The power settings widget
A Bar Code reader
Google Goggles

Thanks for those replies - apart from DaisyNonna since mine is going to cost a lot more than that.
And, squarebear, the phone is the Samsung Galaxy S3 which has S Voice - their version of Siri - so will have to see how well that performs before knowing whether to try something else.
In my views the latest Android devices enjoy blazingly fast 4G LTE networks, top-of-the-line chips, gorgeous displays, and superb cameras, Android apps are more than capable of outshining their iPhone counterparts.
