Monitor not picking up desktop signal

My brand new gaming PC just arrived today. I've just plugged everything in but the monitor I'm using won't pick anything up. The computer turns on, as does the monitor but the monitor stays in standby mode. I've tried two monitors with no luck on either of them. I've read that it may be a lose fitting within the video card but I'm not an expert so I don't know how to fix this.

Firstly, are you sure you're plugging the monitor into the correct port on the back of the computer. It's a bit of a guess but as it's a gaming computer there is a chance it has two monitor ports on the back, one for the separate graphics card, which will be the one that should be used, and another port for the on-board graphics that won't do anything.

If it's not that, then the next step would be to take the top/side off the computer and make sure the graphics card is fully pushed in the slot, they can work loose in transit.

Sounds as if the data isn't getting to the monitor somehow. I note you have tried 2 monitors but maybe good to assume nothing.

First check the monitor and ensure the power light comes on.

Then pull the data lead out and check the pins, make sure none are bent anywhere and it was plugged into the right place.

Try the monitor on another PC if you can. If the data lead is separate try another lead to rule it out.

From your post I assume you are using a separate video card, does the main board have a monitor output you can try ?

After that I'm suspecting you need to open up the PC and ensure the video card you plug into is correctly seated into it's socket. May need to remove and plug it back in.

And if after that it still fails it may just be a duff card, try replacing it with another.

Thanks for the answers, I was trying to use a VGA cable where I needed a DCI to plug into the actual graphics card, so yes you were right:P
