Earphone Connection

I have just purchased a new HD TV (its a Samsung EH5300 32").
So far I am pleased with it, except for one thing, I am hard of hearing so I have been used to listening to TV via a pair of wireless headphones. This has been great, but when I have connected the jack plug to my new TV, the headphones work fine, but it cuts off the sound from the TV, so my family cannot hear it. Obviously this is not satisfactory and I wonder if there is any way I can overcome this problem.

Your old television had two sound outputs that worked individually - one for the speakers on the tv and the other for the headphone jack.

Your new tv has only one - which is the norm, I know from experience.

There will be audio output jacks in the back of the tv but they cannot produce sound on their own, so hooking up your headphones to that won't work. If you have a hifi near to the tv it may be possible to connect your tv to the hifi amplifier and then plug your headphone base in to the hifi jack. I cannot guarantee this will work.

They are intended for your situation - so you can have your 'headphones' at a comfortable volume for you whilst your family listens to a quieter sound level.

How long have you had the tv and how did you buy it?

If you have had it for less than a week and bought it online you can send it back for a full refund and buy a different tv with two audio tuners. This is your right under the Distance Selling Regs.

If you bought it in store it may be worth seeing if the store is willing to exchange it. If the salesperson knew of your need to use headphones without muting the tv speakers and he advised you to buy that model you are entitled to a full refund under the Sale of Goods Act as it is not 'fit for the intended purpose'.

Hi hc4361, many thanks for your helpful answers. The wireless listeners seems a good idea, I will do more research on them. I bought the TV from Argos, so it might be worthwhile giving them a call on Monday. Thanks again

You wouldn't. Weerertyfy was the latest incarnation of our nightly spammer, using a computer-generated username to join AB and advertise cheap trainers via a dodgy link to a Chinese(?) website posted on all current threads. I zapped him/her/it in the early hours of the morning, as I do several times a week (and other moderators do as well).
