Wi-Fi Password

I have a new wireless device that needs to be set up.

I know that my Wi-Fi is secure but I don't know the password to it as Mr Cake set it up and he's not around to ask.

Can I establish what the password is by interrogating any of my other wireless devices?

You probably need to go into your router's settings. If we're to tell you how, we need to know the make.

It's a NetGear router.

Is it actually your password that is required, or the Identity Code of your router that needs to be put into new device?

I don't know as I haven't picked up the device yet, I was assuming it would ask for a password to connect to the WiFi

Connect the router to a computer with an ethernet cable (if it's not already connected that way). Open a web browser on that computer, type 192.168.0.1 into the address bar and hit the 'Enter' key.
(Note: As you're not actually changing anything, you probably don't need to use an ethernet cable. If your computer is only connected wirelessly try these instructions anyway).

That should take you to the router settings log-in page. You'll probably be asked for a username and password. (No, that's not the same as the password you're trying to find out!). Unless Mr Cake changed it [and most people don't] the username is 'admin' and the password is 'password'. (If it's a fairly old router is might also be '1234', or possibly 'setup').

Once you're into the settings you should be able to locate the page showing the password. Don't forget to log out when you've finished.

Have a look at the router most new ones have user name and password on a tag on them somewhere.

I've tried Chris's suggestion and it hasn't worked and I can't find a note of it written anywhere.

Any suggestions for what else I can try?

mine is on the actual router itself. can you ring your provider and see what they suggest?

It's possible that some of them will show the password if you go into the settings where it enables you establish a wifi connection but it might be asterisked out. It depends upon what devices you've got.

I am in agreement with DavetheDog here. The password is usually on the barcode or somewhere on the router.

Chris, I've done a bit of Googling and tried 192.168.1.1

This took me further forward but it seems Mr Cake has changed the default log in from admin and password.

Am I stuffed or are there other routes for me to pursue?

I half knew what the password was and that I wasn't going to find it on the router.

Click on the wifi icon near the clock. Right Click on the network you are connected to and click properties. There should be a Tab called Security. Click this Tab and there is a field called Network Security Key. If you click the Tick Box below this called "Show Characters". This is the password your computer is using to connect to the wireless network.
