Need To Update Ipad (Currently On First Version)

Hi everyone, we have the first ipad and are now finding that most apps need a more up to date software version. I'm not very technical so not sure how to do this and am worried about losing what is already on the ipad. The laptop we first set it up on is now dead as a dodo so have a new laptop which hasn't got iTunes on. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks!

iOS 6 being the latest software is not compatable with your ipad.

ok thanks anyway, what about upgrading to an earlier version? it doesn't have to be the latest just a later version that supports more apps than the first version.
