Just had an email from BT, thought it was a scam. Never had this before and didn't realise I had a limit. Could it be because I now have an ipad as well as my laptop? My laptop is always switched off when not in use but the ipad isn't, I just put the cover over and it switches off, or possibly is on standby. Should I switch off the ipad properly, would this make any difference ?

The iPad isn't the cause then

The ipad is so quick and easy though, I probably use it more than I did when I just used the laptop.
I've had these emails before from BT when I'd only used 3gb of a 10gb limit, it's just a small scam to try and catch the unwary IMO!
I have one desktop that is always on, two smartphones always connected to the wifi as is my tablet and netbook.

Oh. A smart tv is connected, too. Never come close to me limit, as far as I am aware.

If It happens at the end of this month I will ring them but how would I know how much I have used? I will just have to take their word for it
I'm not with BT but apparently you can see your data usage on MyBT

See your BT account online
View your bills
Check your recent usage
See which products you have

http://home.bt.com/
Set up your inclusive extras
If you log into "My BT", under my bill scroll down to my broadband, you can select to see your usage there.
