My friend is transfering from a contract Vodaphone to a contract O2 and wishes to transfer her contacts. It can't be done by putting the sim card in the new phone and transfering that way so has anyone any suggestions?
Both phones have bluetooth so that sounds the easiest way but if vodaphone switches her off early will bluetooth still work on that phone.
Thanks in advance

oops wrong topic how do I transfer this to Technology?
not only will the bluetooth not work, but if the contacts are saved to the phone they will also go. She needs to transfer by bluetooth before the number switches over
Has she asked in an actual shop (vodafone, carphonewarehouse etc) as they can usually do it but not always. I recently switched from PAYG to contract both with vodafone but they warned me the transfer might lose all my contacts because of the type of my old phone. I had to do it all by hand.

Thanks bednobs, that's what she is hoping to do it's just that her O2 phone has been delayed and Bank Holiday has lost her another day to actually receive it. Vodaphone is due to turn off anytime next week.

Prudie, she hasn't been in a shop it's all been done over the phone. I'll tell her to give O2 a call and see what they say. I think she's expecting to have to do it by hand too. A long job!!!!
but looking on the brightside, an opportunity to cull all those names you think who?

Know what you mean. I've got quite a few that I have no idea who they are now, I'm sure my friend will be exactly the same.
There are applications and even hardware you can get that will backup your contacts to the hardware or a PC. Bluetooth or data cable.

Failing that one can copy any handset held contacts to the SIM card (see old handset's menus) and just plug the SIM card into the new handset and copy it to the new handset (see new handset's menus).

You may find they are already stored on the old SIM card.

I'd suggested that with the sim cards thinking all sim cards were the same size but unfortunately the O2 sim is slightly smaller so the Vodaphone one won't fit. Nothing is made easy is it.
I'll suggest she look for a suitable App.
Then backup & restore seems your best bet, but SIM are standard sizes and one can get size convertor kits I believe.

For a moment I thought I'd worked out a way she could do it. Convert the O2 Sim to standard size ( didn't know you could so thanks for that info) and put that in the old phone and transfer that way but then I realised the old Vodaphone phone wouldn't recognise the O2 Sim.
It should recognise it as a SIM card, it should just not let it be used on their network. All non-call/text type menu options should be available.

Oh it might work then. Fingers crossed I'll tell her. Thanks Old Geezer from sticking with me.
