after my laptop did last update. When I go into my documents they are changed to DOCX and I can't open them. It comes up with microsoft office is needed to open this file and is not installed on your computer. Anyone know why this could be? All opened fine before.Windows 7.

It may be worth downloading Service Pack 1 x64 from the Microsoft Download Centre an installing it separately: windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe - 903.2 MB

I also have Office Word and Excel Starter and got this problem after doing Windows updates. I got round it as follows:
Find a Excel spreadseet file or a Word document
RIGHT click on it an you get a menu
Select "Open with"
You see "Microsoft Application Virtualization DDE Launcher".
Select this, then at the bottom make sure the option "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" has a tick against it.
Then click OK.
Now the icon should change back to an Excel or Word icon and the file should open OK.

The same happened to me today. All documents in "normal" Word went to a format I couldn't open. Solution - right click on a document and you get the option to open in Office or Word Doc. Select Word and then switch to default Word. Problem solved to my great relief. No idea how it went to what it did.....
