Samsung Kies Back-Up

Following a factory re-set on my Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830 I'm trying to reinstall my contacts using Kies. Have tried several times; each time I get as far as 'connecting' then after a couple of minutes it reverts to 'Please connect a device'. I've tried reinstalling the software, rebooting the PC, everything I can think of, but without success. Any suggestions, please?

I find the Kies software a bit crap tbh, I feel for you. When it cannot find a device it should show an option to 'Troubleshoot connections'. Make sure your using a usb cable. I find the wi fi connection option even more flaky.

Yes, I've switched off wi-fi temporarily. The annoying thing is that it got connected earlier today before I did the re-set, but now I think it's sulking.
