Was updating iTunes ...was asked to restart computer...when it shut down and screen came live again it froze...so I switched off power and then on again...but now hard drive is dead ? Is it fused ?
was installing itunes tonight and got into one almighty mess !! all sorts of things wanted to install themselves ? switched off.... and re-booted, but things aren't right. looks like i've got a bit of sorting out to do tomorrow :(
It's usually iTunes and quick time that install....had no problems there but now hard drive just doesn't seem to be getting any power ...do these tower hard drives have a fuse ?
dont know mm !! thought there was nothing simpler to do tonight than download itunes to new pc !! how wrong I was. PC closed down, wanted to update ? (only two days old) and got stuck on updating 18 of 81 for over an hour !! whatever that means !! Like I said, i've got a bit of work to do tomorrow
Hard drive dead?
What exactly happens when you try to turn on the PC?
Do you hear it booting, and does Windows start to boot? Is it totally lifeless, or do you get a display or message on the monitor?
when my old pc did that i unplugged it from the mains and stuck a metal object a knife in my case across the live and neutral pins to discharge it. plugged it back in and it always worked for me
That sounds incredibly dodgy ivor. Not sure it ought to be advice given.
PCs may have a fuse, you can always check the back panel, but otherwise the plug is where to check (Or the wall socket maybe.) Otherwise sometimes power supplies get tripped and need the mains cable to be unplugged and left a while to recover.
With a "nothing happens" scenario it certainly sounds like a power issue.
After the motherboard boot screen disappears anything else happen, like a cursor blinking?
What sort of keyboard and mouse you using are they plugged in via usb?
Try restarting pc and keep tapping F8 key, to get Windows 'safe mode' running.
What pc is it, Make, Model No. Your on Windows XP, is this fully up to date? Do you have a Windows XP install disc?
It sounds like it can not find a bootable source to use. Maybe the message is to inform you that if you kept pressing F2 whilst it was comin on it would have gone to the BIOS screen, but it is past that point by the time you try it ? If you do not know what to do in the BIOS settings I'm unsure I'd recommend you play with it. Get someone knowledgable to look at it. The boot menu might be safer to try. I assume it simply gives you a choice as to where to boot from.
