Ipod mini

For some reason, when I connected my iPod mini to my pc using the supplied USB cable, instead of opening up iTunes like it usually does, it just started charging. The screen on the Ipod has a battery taking up the whole screen which it doesn't usually do. Does anyone know why this is? I'm pretty sure I didn't do anything different than I usually do.

connect the ipod, launch itunes manually, in the edit / preferences section, click on "ipod" - there's an option there (if memory serves correctly) to automatically launch itunes when an ipod is connected.
