Start > Run > Cmd <Press Enter>
On the Command prompt, type :
netstat -a <press enter>
You will see a list of connections that your computer has at that moment .. You can deduce the IP address by matching it with Msn Messenger's PID
You would need to initiate a video or voice conference to get a direct connection to the contact. Text messages get routed through a central server as far as I know and not directly to the contact. For speed, voice and video use direct connections.
During the conference, do a netstat as Tritan suggested. No need for the -a as this lists all listening sockets too, you're only interested in connected sockets. You can use -n to force it to list just the IP address instead of hostnames (it will list IP if it can't resolve to a hostname anyway).
If you do this without actually doing anything else on the internet (web browsing, p2p downloads etc) the IP address should be apparent.

Just an addendum... there is a program called aports that lists what sockets a program is using. It's handy for detecting any dodgy stuff that's managed to install on your pc too..

Norton AV rates this program as a security risk, but only in the fact that it can be used by hackers. They should really rate ping aswell if that's their philisophy. Other than that, it's a very handy util.
