The fact that you may have a static IP address (as oppossed to a dynamic one with a dial-up connection), may mean that attempted attacks happen more often, but if your anti-virus software is not working, there only needs to be one succesful attempt!
You don't say why you think you are not protected. Are you sure you are not talking about spyware rather than viruses? In the absence of a working anti-virus program, you would most likely get a virus which would render your computer virtually unusable - in which case, you wouldn't be able to use it to post on this forum!
Eternity - I think Josian was as you thought, asking for alternatives. I think though, the problem is due, not the choice of software, but more likely the fact that it was not working properly. Either that, or it is really not a virus problem at all!
I don't know The Shield Pro, or Bit Defender 8 from personal experience, but I'm sure your recommedations are correct. I would be careful about PC-cillin though - I've had a few bad experiences with it, and it does try and take over your whole machine. (Though to fair these problems have been on network installs).
