Italics

How is it possible to write in italic,say I just want to stress one word when I am writing an e-mail,can I just press something to change to italic,and then back again,as simply as possible?

In a lot of cases, pressing CTRL and 'i' at the same time toggles into italic mode, and out again when you've finished, but not every application recognises that.

I suspect it would depend on the e-mail client you are using.
Does yours have menus with font options on it ? Are you using plain text, rich text, HTML ?

To do italics on here put [i] at either end of what you want in italics

Bloomin 'eck Old Geezer that is a bit technical for me I don't really know,I think plain old boring stuff,I haven't changed any settings.I tried Ctrl and i and I got a bookmarks menu pop up at the side,same when I highlighted it,so maybe my laptop does not recognise such a command.

It's square bracket, then lower case i, square bracket. Type the without a space, then square bracket, i, square bracket.

it'll be not the laptop but the system you're writing on. Gmail gives you the option of using italics; so does Answerbank. Gmail lets you use bold type, AB doesn't. You can use them on Word. But on some websites and some email providers you can't. One way of similarly emphasising words is to put *asterisks* before and after the words you want to stress. Or use capital letters, though that can look like SHOUTING!
