Make sure that there is no screen saver running
Check that the DVD/CD drive is connected with an 80pin UDMA cable and not a 40pin as burning will fail intermittently.
Go to the Nero website for updates and they also explain other avenues you can take to rectify this situation.
Watch the processes on your PC, If CPU usage goes up to 100% for a significant time, find the process thats using it and either resolve the mis-configuration or remove the program that drives the process.
