It's not clear from your post exactly what you're trying to do. Have you received a document that someone else has saved in LibreOffice's native format (and you've not got LibreOffice yourself)?. Have you got LibreOffice and want to save just one document in Word format? Or do you want LibreOffice to always save in Word format?

If you've received a document from someone else in LibreOffice's native format then you'll either need to install LibreOffice yourself or ask them to send you the document again, after saving it in Word format first (using the instructions below in either case).

If you want to save a single LibreOffice document in Word format, simply go to File > Save As and select a Word format from the 'File type' box.

If you want to save all LibreOffice documents in Word format, go to Tools > Options > Load/Save > General > Document type > Always save as.

i have received a document in word, and only have libre office, so how do i open the document?
right click on document and go to "open with" then select "libre office" that should do it.
Oh, so you meant 'convert Word to LibreOffice, then!

LibreOffice should open Word documents (with either the .doc or .docx file extension) automatically. Simply go to File > Open, navigate to the location of the file on your hard drive and double-click on it.
Question Author
it wont, it tries to open in word, after an age, i get a box saying it doesnt recognise the document!!
Question Author
ratters, thats what i usually do, but when clicking, the list doesn´t show libreoffice
What are the letters after the . ?
Question Author
when i try tried to open the file, it says its a .xlsb file, and underneath says download in a zip, when i did, i got a list without libreoffice!!
That's weird!

If the document is likely to contain only text (rather than tables or graphics) try opening it in WordPad (from Start > Programs > Accessories).

Otherwise ask the sender to save another copy (using File > Save as) in Word 95 format (which almost any word processor can handle) and then forward it to you.

Alternatively download and install OpenOffice, and see if OpenOffice Writer can open it:

Aagh! Crossed posts!

.xlsb isn't a Word format. It's an Excel spreadsheet one!

Try opening it with LibreOffice's 'Calc' program!
Question Author
how?
Either:
Right-click on the file, select 'Open with' and then 'Calc'

or:
Launch LibreOffice Calc (from Start > Programs > LibreOffice) and go to File > Open, then locate the file and double-click on it.
Question Author
chris... i tried both sugestions without any luck, the 1st just gave me a useless box to choose from, the 2nd was when i went to libre calc, and just got a tiny image of the document in the centre of the page.
Question Author
i think i cracked it, finally. after seemingly messing about in the dark, i was able to open this so and so document.
thanx chris
