Assuming you mean the add-on which can't be named here, have you turned on any filter subscriptions (EasyList is a good one to start with)?

For security and privacy reasons, you could also try Ghostery https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ghostery/ and/or RequestPolicy https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search/?q=requestpolicy&appver=24.0&;platform=windows which is more powerful but requires a significant effort to get it to work how you want it.

Easiest way is to (I'm assuming a bit here) is to systematically switch of your recent add-ons one at a time to find which one it is.

^ That's what I use but my assumption was because they're are recent. certain words which are highlighted a pop up appears.
Firefox has its own pop-up blocker under Tools/Options/Content

Avast is antivirus. Ads are usually not flagged as a virus. I find it difficult to believe no one has suggested running malwarebytes yet.
