Is it legal to copy CDs so that you can have a copy in the car and one in your house (for example)?

Type Your Answer Here...it would seem that it's legal if you own the CD

Thanks alba, I thought it was legal!

I'm good, how's tricks with you? xx
all's good thanks! xx

I always thought if it wasn't legal, then 'they' wouldn't sell blank cds

albeit the blank ones can be used for other recording purposes :-D
That's a US website, Alba. (Their laws are different to ours).

Up until the 1st June it was illegal to copy CD tracks in any manner (both by making a copy of the CD or by ripping tracks to MP3 format). It's now lawful to do so as long as the copy is for (and remains only for) your personal use. So if, for example, a passenger in your car says how much they like the CD you're playing, and you then give them the copy, you must destroy the original:

I'm too tight to give anything away, Chris!

:-D
Thanks, Chris, never noticed it was a US site.
(really must read things before I C&P) :-)
I had not realised they'd changed the rules. Just as well you got here Chris as I was about to post it was illegal. Seems the law may have finally caught up with what most of the public thought /did anyway.
(how)can I copy my cd's on to my lap-top.
cheers chris, next time I put one in, i'll give that a go. probably be a lot of supplementary questions. ;-)
