I currently have McAfee internet security and it's about to run out.

Is there something I could get for free that would be just as good, or do I really need to spend the £60?

We use McAfee, it seems very good. We get it free with PlusNet.
This works for me & its free.

Avast (the free version) is fine for home use - I've used it for years with no problems. AVG free is good too.

Just make sure you download whichever you choose from the correct site (we can give you a link).
Yes please, Dave

Official free version of Avast
Thanks Dave, now installed and running xx
Make sure you don't have any other antivirus running as well - they can get in a tangle.

Also run Malwarebytes every now & then.

TTT is talking rubbish. There is nothing wrong with MSE and it is not riddled with malware, spyware or anything else. We have it installed on all our PCs (we have 6) and they are all virus free.

I've never had problems with Avast being intrusive; it occasionally tells me to install updated programs, and sometimes I do and sometimes I ignore it. I think of that as helpful rather than intrusive.

I don't need to read that article. I know that all our PCs are virus free as I am the one in charge of maintenance for all of them. MSE has been fine for us so why change!?
No doubt if Chris (Buenchico) was on here saying this....as he has quite recently...people would be more receptive. Oh well.....
Chris isn't a techie and he will happily tell you that if you ask him. He has awesome Googling skills though :)
By the way, what on earth makes you think Chris is the only person on AB who knows anything about computers?
I have used MSE for a few years now and have never had any problems with it.

Thanks everyone, lots to think about.

Who knew that anti-virus choice could be such a topic for debate?

:-)
