i would never visit the 'less reputable sites' shall we say as i would imagine they are chock full of spyware and other such nasties.

No they do not.
The majority of viruses are released by programmers who use unsolicited e-mail. That way the virus is spread by internet users who have e-mail accounts (the majorityl) not just users in a "speciality niche".
Do a Google search for the "sasser" or "I love you" viruses and read some of the results.
As far as the porn sites bit is concerned you are on your own.
I spend a lot of time installing child safe internet filters on computers and have no comment to make.

The things that come ffrom these porn sites (so I'm led to believe!) are trojans and hijacks rather than viruses. A trojan can be something like a dialer and a highjack usualy changes your browser in some way.
