You'd have to convert to a different file format to "decompress" an avi... e.g. mpeg

Why would you want the same quality file with the only difference being that the new one takes up more space?

One (of many) companies that produce this type of software is 'Cucusoft'

same or better quality
The above poster is right, you can not decompress an avi only convert it to another format such as DIVX. What ever you do will not upgrade the quality as you can only get out at best the original file quality.
If your original file is MPEG2 (eg DVD) then its a good idea to convert it to DIVX or XVID to save space as the file size will be greatly reduced. There will be a difference in quality depending at what BIT rate you re-encode at, as to how much, thats up to you and how much space you want to save. From my own point of view, I really cant tell the difference betwwen an hour of MPEG2 footage at a Gigabyte+ in size and DIVX footage of an hour which will weigh in at a good two thirds less in size and still mantain a good quality.
