memory question

when i have upgraded my memory in my old pc i have used a 512mb ram DIMM. when i go to system, it says i am only using a 128mb ram and the 512 is the only memory in my pc. the processor is an intel celeron(old i know, but im getting a new pc in a while). anyone who can help will be a lifesaver. thanks in advance

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Have you tried going in to the pc bios to see if you need to change a setting there. Most modern pc's dont require this sort of thing, but on an old machine you may have to tell the pc that it is there.
The only other thing I can think of is that you have got 2 memory slots which had 2 128mb sticks in before and have only replaced one with a new 512mb stick. I seem to recall that some memory is fussy and must have matching sticks in there. If thats the case, then take out the smaller stick and just leave the larger one in.
I'm presuming of course that you checked what memory your pc took before buying it as I know that over the years there has been many different types such as Rambus, EDO, DRAM etc and they are all incompatible.
