my outlook email icon has disapeared - how do i get it back - so i can get on my emails?

I assume that you mean a shortcut to the email client 'Outlook', rather than a shortcut to the web-based service 'Outlook.com'. (Only Microsoft could be stupid enough to give the same name to two entirely different things!).
Go to Start > Programs and look for Outlook there. (It might be under 'Microsoft Office'). If you can't see it, run a search for 'Outlook.exe'. Then right-click on it and select Send To > Desktop (Shortcut).

Its called standardizing your offerings.
They had their own email system in office called Outlook.
They also has Outlook Express given "free" in Windows XP (which was different from the Outlook in Office).
They then bought Hotmail and kept the name for a while.
But then decided to standardize on the name Outlook for all their mail offerings.
Seems a perfectly sensible decision.
For the same reason Marathon is now called Snickers (now same name world wide) and Opal Fruits are called Starburst (again same name world wide).
When you are working across the whole world you want the same name for your product (Outlook) on all platforms and in all markets.

the trouble is i could logon this morning so had to go in by safe mode and then change soem registry settings
i had to type bac1 at the end of a long number if that makes sense
anyway it seamed to work and the computer opened up as normal
but the outlook express is no longer there - and doesnt seam to be anywhere
i have tried to re load it but thats not working either ?

You might think it sensible but I've answered dozens of questions on here where people have written "I'm having problems with Outlook". It has sometimes then taken three or four posts to find out that they meant Outlook.com when I've been writing about the email client called Outlook (or vice versa)! How anyone can see them as 'the same' (and thus in need of a common name) when one is software that works with any POP3/IMAP email service and the other is a website offering a particular email service is beyond me!

Have you definitely checked everything listed under 'Programs' (or 'All Programs')? Outlook Express (which you now tell us it is, rather than Outlook) should be listed under 'Microsoft Office' or something similar. If it's not then the program file you're looking for is 'msimn.exe'. It's location will be something like 'C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe' (or simply search for it by its file name). Once you've located it, right-click and select Send To > Desktop (Shortcut)
