Over the Christmas holiday I recorded to DVD (via a Sony tv recorder) quite a few programs but for some unknown reason they have all turned out in 4.3 aspect ratio instead of 16.9 meaning that all programs have a black bar on each side, does anybody know of a free program I can download to change the aspect ratio?

If you change the aspect ratio would that not mean either the picture gets distorted or you lose picture information top & bottom ? It can't replace what it hasn't recorded.
O_G could well be right. However, if you have a Windows Media Player, you could try the following :-

Hans.
Most TVs have a range of aspect ratios for each input.

Try changing to 'zoom' which should fill the screen without distorting the picture (you will lose a slice off the top and bottom though)

A big thank you to everyone, I guess the problem is with the set up on the recorder but after going into settings it will not let me input 16.9 it just seems to do what it wants as some programs seem OK, I guess it is just how they are broadcast in the first place.
