Desktop Icons

Having a bit of trouble with laptop lately, firefox, windows 8.1, sony vaio. Now when I want to save something to desktop, it also creats a file folder, which is has nevetr done before, it is filling up the space. When I delete the file folder on desktop, it deletes the icon I want to save. Can anyone help in simple terms please, and thank you.

Well I admit to being lost here but it might help others (or possibly get my own brain cells functioning) if you could tell us what it is that you're seeking to put on your desktop. Are you putting files there (such as your autobiography in Word format) or shortcuts to programs (such as to Word itself) or shortcuts to websites (such as this one)?

Well I have sorted it eventually, no idea what was happening but it was just photos etc and I found when saving them to desktop I had to change the format (is it) to HTML only I think. I may have got it wrong that that's roungly what I did.
